Submission Guidelines
Submission Guidelines
Beyond welcomes submissions. We are a highly visual magazine with an eclectic range of content. We publish essays, poetry, interviews, short stories, reviews, opinion pieces and excerpts from larger works. We also publish photography, illustrations, paintings, drawings, sketchbook pages, and art projects.
The amount of payment we can offer for writing and visual submissions is limited and sometimes non-existent. We wish it weren't so. We'd like to be paid as well. Hopefully, as subscribers, donations and grants come on board, this will change. That being said, please do inquire about submissions. Be honest about what you expect up front and we will be honest about what we can offer.
Here are some helpful suggestions:
1. Know something about us. If you can, find us and read us. Subscribing is a good thing but you can also order singles issues.
Poke around
this website. Take the tour. New writers are most likely to be included in our
features called Truly Human and Random Access. Truly Human can be a
written (between 500 and 1000 words) or visual piece on some aspect of
the human experience. Random Access is an essay or personal reflection
written by one of our readers that relates to the theme of the current
magazine.
Upcoming Themes include:
- Body
- News
- Time and Space
And yes, the themes are really that broad.
(You should probably know who we aren't. There are other magazines out there with the word Beyond in them - some deal with travel, health, religious subculture, paranormal occurrences, and music. If you tour around here or read our About Beyond page, you will notice all of those magazines are not us and we notice right away if you are talking to someone else. We're always amazed that writers send things off to the first email address they find. And yes, this happens a lot.)
2. Please do not send us attachments or material right away. It would be helpful if you could introduce yourself and provide some background information via email or mail. If you have an online link to your work, this would allow us to immediately see what you do.
If we are interested in looking at your material, we'll contact you and ask you to send us samples of your work. This will allow your attachments to get through our spam filters. We know this is tedious but this is life amidst the spam.
The subject of your
email shouldn't say "Hi" or "Hello" or something vague. Try to be
specific. "Beyond magazine content idea" or some such thing should make
it past the spam filters.
Email can be sent to:
beyondmag at gmail dot com
3. Show us some of your work. A lot of people write us and say, "I don't have any samples." We can't do anything about that. We suggest you build a body of work because we can't just take you at your word. And, yes, this is also a very common statement. That's why we're mentioning it.
4. We don't provide critiques of your work. We suggest you get involved in a critique group or find people near you that can give you feedback. Bribe them with treats. We like treats. But we still won't critique your work.
5. We will try to get back to you as soon as we can. We're trying our best to keep up but it can take a while especially if we're in the middle of publishing or on the road. Or finishing episodes of Battlestar Galactica. We meant to say The Complete Works of Shakespeare.
It can be hard for us to get back to everyone. We try to respond as soon as we can but there's a lot of work and only a few of us.
6.
Don't send originals. We can't assume responsibility for unsolicited material that is lost,
damaged, or misplaced so you shouldn't send us originals.
7. Have fun! Here's to writing, painting, drawing, making music, thinking, and creating good things. We wish you well.
